The VW 02J gearbox is one of the most widely produced 5-speed manual transmissions in the Volkswagen Group. It is the successor to the well-known 02A and was designed for cars with a transverse engine (transverse).

You can find this transmission in almost the entire lineup from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s. Here is the list of the main models:

1. Volkswagen

This was the "bread-and-butter" bin for most mid-size cars with engines such as the 1.8T, 2.0 (8v) and the 1.9 TDI.

  • Golf IV (4): Almost all 5-speed manual transmissions (1.8T, 2.0, 1.9 TDI).

  • Bora / Jetta (A4): The sedan versions of the Golf.

  • New Beetle: Both the gasoline and diesel versions.

  • Polo (9N): The more powerful versions, such as the Polo GTI (1.8T).

  • Passat (B5): Note: Only the rare models with transverse engine in specific markets, but most Passats of that era have an 012/01W (longitudinal).

2. Audi

  • Audi A3 (8L): The first generation A3, especially the 1.8 Turbo and the 1.9 TDI.

  • Audi TT (8N): The front-wheel-drive 180 hp variant (the Quattros used the 6-speed 02M gearbox).

3. SEAT

  • Leon (1M): The 1.8T (20V) and 1.9 TDI (90/110 hp).

  • Toledo (1M): The sedan version of the Leon.

  • Ibiza (6L): The FR and Cupra models with 1.9 TDI or 1.8T.

4. Škoda

  • Octavia (1U): The first-generation Octavia, including the popular RS version (1.8T).

Technical characteristics for the specialist

If you work on these bodies, these are the reasons why they show up so often in the workshop for upgrades:

  • Switching mechanism: Unlike the 02A (which was still a bit choppy), the 02J works with a much smoother cable system. Many people even convert their old 02A gearbox to an 02J shift tower.

  • Differential: The stock differential is a known weak point in tuning (the rivets can come loose). This makes the 02J one of the most popular boxes for installing a limited slip differential.

  • Flanges: There are versions with 100mm and 108mm driveshaft flanges, which is important when swapping between a TDI and a 1.8T.
