The Audi 016 (also called the Audi 5000 transaxle) is a legendary gearbox from the 1980s. It was one of the most powerful transaxles of the time, making it not only popular in production cars, but also a favorite for kit cars and GT40 replicas.

Here are the cars that use the Audi 016 gearbox:

1. Audi Models (The Basics).

The 016 was the standard 5-speed transmission for the larger, more powerful Audi cars with the engine longitudinally.

  • Audi 100 / 200 (C2 and C3): Mainly the models with the 5-cylinder engines.

  • Audi 5000: The American type designation for the Audi 100/200; the transmission is even known as the "Audi 5000 transmission" in the US.

  • Audi Quattro (Ur-Quattro): The legendary rally-based street car used a 4WD variant of the 016 (with limited slip differential).

  • Audi V8 (D11): Early manual versions of Audi's first luxury limousine.

2. Porsche Models.

Porsche worked closely with Audi and used the 016 in their "transaxle" models (where the engine is at the front and the transmission is at the rear near the axle).

  • Porsche 924: The 5-speed manual transmission in the standard 924 is an Audi 016 unit.

  • Porsche 924 Turbo (931): Used a reinforced version of the 016.

  • Porsche 944: Early models (before the introduction of the later Porsche-specific transmissions) used the 016 architecture.

3. Kitcars and Replicas (Why It's Famous).

For decades, the Audi 016 has been the "go-to" gearbox for people building a GT40 replica or other mid-engine sports car.

  • Lola T70 replicas

  • GT40 replicas (such as early models from Tornado or KVA).

  • De Tomaso Pantera: Sometimes used as a cheaper alternative to the overpriced ZF boxes in restorations or swaps.

Why the 016? The transmission is popular because it has a "transaxle" design (gearbox and differential in one housing) and is designed for Audi's powerful 5-cylinder turbos. This allows it to handle a lot of torque (up to about 400 Nm in standard form) compared to other transmissions of the era.
