The Audi 01E is the direct successor to the 016 and is known as one of the most robust manual transmissions Audi has ever produced. Because this transmission was designed for the torquey RS models and diesels, it is extremely popular in the tuning and motorsports world.

Here are the main cars that use the 01E:

1. Legendary Audi S/RS Models.

These are the cars to which the 01E owes its reputation as "indestructible."

Audi RS2: The legendary station wagon (developed with Porsche) has a 6-speed 01E transmission.
Audi S2: Both the coupe and sedan/avant (3B and ABY engines).
Audi S4 (B5): The 2.7 Bi-Turbo V6 uses the 6-speed variant.
Audi RS4 (B5): The superlative of the S4, with an even further enhanced 01E.
Audi S6 (C4): Both the 2.2 Turbo and 4.2 V8 variants.

2. The Audi Diesel and V8 models.

Due to the high torque of diesel engines, the 01E was the standard choice:

Audi 100 / A6 (C4): Especially the 2.5 TDI (the famous 5-cylinder diesel).
Audi A4 (B6): The early 2.5 TDI V6 models with manual transmission.
Audi A8 (D2): The rare manual 2.5 TDI and the early V8 models.

3. Volkswagen

Although VW usually has transversely mounted engines, models with longitudinally (longitudinal) mounted engines also used Audi technology:

As with the 016, Porsche again borrowed technology for their transaxle line:

Porsche 968: The 6-speed transmission in the 968 is basically an Audi 01E transaxle (albeit with Porsche-specific modifications for the rear axle assembly).

5. The Kitcar & Supercar World.

The 01E is the current "king" of transaxle swaps. As the 016 becomes scarcer and can handle less torque, the 01E (especially the 2WD diesel body from the Audi A6) is the choice for:

GT40 Replicas: (Such as Superformance or Factory Five).
Ultima GTR: Often used in combination with fat V8 engines.
Lamborghini/Ferrari Replicas: Because of its ability to handle up to 700-800 hp with minor modifications.

Why is the 01E so popular?

Torque Management: The 01E can already handle around 450-500 Nm as standard. With a stronger first and second gear (often done on RS4 upgrades) this goes much higher.
6-speed: Unlike the 016, most 01E transmissions offer six gears.
Flexibility: You can convert the 4WD version to 2WD relatively easily by locking or removing the center differential, making it ideal for rear-wheel-drive mid-engine cars.
