The Audi 01E gearbox is a legendary manual transmission (usually 6-speed, although rare 5-speed variants exist). The transmission was produced from the early 1990s to the mid-1990s and was designed for cars with a longitudinally mounted engine (longitudinal).

The Audi 01E was factory delivered in the following cars:

Audi (Quattro & FWD)

This is the gearbox that gave the fast Audi's of the '90s and '00s their legendary status. It came in both all-wheel drive (Quattro) and rarer front-wheel drive versions:

  • Audi S2 & RS2 Avant (The iconic 5-cylinder turbocharged cars - from late 1992 these got the 01E 6-speed transmission)

  • Audi Ur-S4 & Ur-S6 (C4) (Both with the 2.2 Turbo 5-cylinder and the 4.2 V8)

  • Audi S4 & RS4 (B5) (Coupled with the familiar 2.7 liter V6 Biturbo)

  • Audi A6 / Allroad (C5) (In manual 2.7 Biturbo and 2.5 V6 TDI models)

  • Audi A8 (D2) (Only in the rare manual 2.5 TDI and the European manual S8 V8 models)

Porsche (Boxster)

Although developed by Audi/Aisin, Porsche purchased this transmission for the first generations of the Boxster. Porsche modified the transmission to a pure rear-wheel-drive transaxle layout(with no Quattro differential):

  • Porsche Boxster S (986) (The 6-speed transmission in the 3.2L models)

  • Porsche Boxster S & Cayman S (987) (Early builds used a further development of this architecture)

Skoda & Volkswagen

Within the VAG group, the body was also used for models that shared the platform with the Audi A4 and A6:

  • Volkswagen Passat (B5 & B5.5) (Coupled with the 2.5 V6 TDI and the rare Passat W8 with 4Motion)

  • Skoda Superb (First generation) (On the heavier 2.5 V6 TDI versions)

The "Kitcar" and Conversion culture.

You can't really answer the question about the 01E gearbox without mentioning the aftermarket world. Because the transmission has a built-in differential that fits perfectly behind a fat mid-engine, the Audi 01E is the absolute favorite for:

  • Ford GT40 replicas (The 01E is very often hung behind an American Ford V8).

  • Porsche 944 / 928 upgrades (As a bulletproof replacement for the fragile original Porsche buckets when tuning).

  • Ultima GTR and other component cars with fat V8 engines.
