In Europe, sporty Ford Escorts (such as the RS2000) were equipped with the familiar English or Atlas axles. In South Africa, however, Ford produced the cars locally, opting for the locally produced BorgWarner M68 axle.
In the European and South African classic rally world, this made the axle known as the "Joburg axle" (named after Johannesburg). It is a sought-after upgrade for historic rally Escorts because it is lighter than a Ford Atlas axle, but stronger than the standard English Ford axle.
The most famous modern application of the BorgWarner M68 can be found under the Birkin S3. Birkin (a South African manufacturer of very high-quality Lotus Seven replicas) used the M68 as the standard rigid rear axle for their legendary roadsters.
Since the Birkin is used extensively on the track worldwide, renowned differential manufacturer Quaife even developed a specific ATB limited slip differential (QDH1L) purely as a direct upgrade for the BorgWarner M68 axle in the Birkin S3.
Like its bigger brothers (the M75 and M78 which were under heavier V8 models), the more compact M68 architecture was used in Australia in the 1980s and 1990s under lighter models and lighter motorizations (4-cylinder and early 6-cylinder) of the:
Ford Falcon
Holden Commodore
